Artist
Stephanie nourishes herself with walking, writing, and Pilates (and cocktail hour.) She meets monthly with moms in her neighbourhood to read and write their lives. They have followed The Sound of Paper by Julia Cameron (author of The Artist’s Way) and future projects include art-making, clay and theatre exercises. Stephanie is grateful to have a pen back in her hands (now that they’re not quite so full of kids!) She has also returned to acting in a way, having taken a workshop in Devised Theatre with Pig Iron Theatre as part of the 2011 Volcano Conservatory.
Domestic Blitz: We’re not supposed to talk about religion and politics, so let’s try sex and death instead. In this interactive, arts-based workshop, participants will be invited to share their stories of household challenges as well as those rare, remarkable moments of domestic bliss. Domestic Blitz is a frank exchange on family life where several brains are better than one, helping each other with the complex realities of family life.
Pregnant Lady Dancing: From conception to birth, it's all about babies, but Pregnant Lady Dancing is about the ridiculous, heartwrenching wonder of producing parents. It follows four stories in which a gay couple adopts, an estranged couple reunites, a perfect couple crumbles, and an ill-equipped couple kind of succeeds. Nine months are condensed into ninety minutes, and four babies are forever bonded by being born at exactly the same time.
Amaze Me: (Author’s Note) When I wrote this solo show and toured it across Canada’s Fringe Festivals, I used to believe that in the labyrinth of life there were three options: do nothing, make it worse, or try to make it better. I now know that ‘doing nothing’, in fact, maintains the status quo, which, for many people, makes things worse. As an advocate for social justice, I see so much reason for change and so much hope to believe it is possible. ‘Amaze Me’ was prophetic nonetheless in that it featured four characters - a mother, an artist, a teacher and an angry, mouthy grrrl – all of whom abide in the current me.
